Relations between COVID cases/deaths/hospitalization and
Vaccination rates in the
World/Europe countries including
health factors as well as Human development Index.
There are lots of speculations about vaccines effectiveness over some period
of time ([1], [2], [3], [4], [6]), so I collected data from different sources which
may shed some light on vaccines efficiency’s fading issue.
A few major sources for such data are:
1. WHO [7]
2. Github ([8], [9])
3. European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control [10]
4. OWID (Our World In Data) [11]
All datasets required data massaging and cleaning before start planned data visualization and
further analysis.
In order to perform visualization using Tableau, I combined 5 datasets based on some common fields,
so it will be easy to analyze data from different sources. Some datasets include data per country/per
date/week for the entire population, while some datasets differentiate data based on age groups -
such datasets are mostly from the European sources.
In order to make all relationships between
COVID cases/deaths/hospitalization and vaccination numbers relevant – the minimum date in all
datasets is set to 1/1/2021.
I came up with Tableau Story that comprises of 3 Dashboards (click on the forward/back arrow
below the Story’s title to see them).
There are three worksheets presented on the first dashboard. Two of them show relationship between
COVID cases and health factors around the world (though, health factors information is not available
for all countries for which COVID cases are reported). Hover over each country on the map to see
health factors figures. Despite many articles/blogs suggestions that there is a direct correlation
between COVID infection/hospitalization/deaths and several health factors - the trend lines for each
health factor vs. COVID cases doesn’t support those suggestions: p-value is far from being significant
(the following article [5] supports this finding, but for the obesity and smoking only). Presented
correlation includes additional factor which is Human Development index. It can be noted that developed
countries have low CVD (Cardio Vascular Disease) rate, while have high female smoking rate.
The third worksheet on this dashboard is about vaccination progress in all European countries - including
vaccine type for different age groups.
Use slider to see data for different age groups (for countries where such data is available) or for the
entire country’s population.
Second dashboard is about visualizing correlation between COVID cases/deaths/hospitalization and
vaccination numbers either for the entire population or per age group per week (starting from 1/1/2021).
The graph shows clearly downward trend in all countries for COVID cases/deaths starting week # 10-15
of 2021 (when vaccination rate ramp up drastically), though it becomes up slightly starting weeks # 28-30.
This may indicate that vaccine effectiveness is vanning, but not significant as some experts suggested.
On the same time period the vaccination trend is up steady (up to week # 30) and then keeps a bit
flat (use slider to see numbers per age group, per week). The box plots also show negative correlation
between vaccination rate and COVID cases/deaths. That correlation stronger for age group 80+ compare to
other age groups.
Third dashboard presents two maps with COVID cases/deaths/hospitalization numbers for each country per
age group, per week. Hover over each country on the map to see the respective trend including vaccination
figures. Map on the right shows world countries rank (in period of weeks since January 4,2021) based on fully
vaccinated population, along with the COVID cases for the same period of time. Use “Agegroup” and “Week”
sliders for the left map, as well as “Up to week” and “Rank” slider for the right map.
